When living and working in Sweden, you will need a Swedish personal identification number: a 'personnummer'.

If you plan to live in Sweden for a longer period of time, you will need to register and be listed in the Swedish Population Register, register as a resident in Sweden. Your details such as name, address, date of birth, and civil status will be registered with the Swedish Tax Agency. Once you are registered as a citizen in Sweden with the tax authorities, you will receive a personal identity number, a ‘personnummer’. The Swedish Tax Agency decides if you meet the requirements.

What is it and what is it used for? The Swedish ‘personnummer’ is your identity in Sweden, it is a 10-digit number. A personal identification number is a 4-digit number following your date of birth in the format: YYMMDD-XXXX. It is obtained when you are registered in the Swedish population register.

Everyone living in Sweden must have a social security number. ... The number is composed of the date of birth plus three digits plus one check digit. The gender is indicated by the third digit, even for women, odd for men. These three digits also sometimes, but not always, contain information about the region of birth.

You will need a Swedish personal identity number to get around as a citizen in Sweden. It is widely used throughout daily life in Sweden, for memberships and subscriptions, opening a bank account, renting or buying a house, in order to get paid, or all healthcare purposes. In short, you need it for almost everything!

How do I apply for a personal identity number in Sweden/ personnummer?

You apply via the Swedish Tax Agency. You will only be able to apply in person at one of the offices of the Swedish Tax Agency.
