They bring diversity in the workplace. This is very important at Nike.  International personnel also bring more international experience which fits the culture at Nike. It brings with it unique strengths and can complement well the weaknesses. Another advantage of the diversity is the opportunity for employees' personal growth. Being exposed to new ideas, cultures and perspectives can help the team to reach out intellectually and gain a clearer view of their surroundings and their place in the world. Having international people from different backgrounds and experiences can inspire more creative ideas and methods of solving problems.

What is diversity in your opinion?

Diversity is all about being open to new ideas instead of being afraid of them. It is about embracing creativity instead of pushing it away or ignoring it. Many times it is beneficial to look at issues from different angles.  Almost all markets in which we do business today are diverse and multicultural. I believe that every business should be a reflection of their markets.

You have hired candidates from Undutchables in the past. Why, in your opinion, would you use Undutchables as a partner?

As said before, Undutchables delivers diversity in many ways. They work in another way by using a personal approach. This may take a little extra time from both candidates and companies but pays off very well in the end.

Undutchables can read CV’s in a different way.  The unique blend of qualities of a person is seldom directly visible in a CV. This is where the expertise of Undutchables comes in. They may propose a candidate who on paper did not match the written jobspec completely but offers qualities that are just right for the client. I’m very happy with the people we recruited with their help. Once Undutchables has surprised you with perhaps a less obvious candidate that proved to be a real gem, they will have gained your  trust for the next time you need staff. I do believe that this is the most important thing.

Being an International, what added value do you bring to your company?

Due to my international background I’ve been exposed to many different working cultures, different working methods and many different situations that I would have not experienced if I stayed in my home country. I strongly believe this exposure is the added value I bring to the company because thanks to the experiences I’ve had, I’m quicker and more flexible when it comes to reacting to changes or when it comes to fit into new roles/responsibilities. I believe companies appreciate this “edge” I bring with me and leverage it to achieve their goals.

Well, in my daily job I deal with people who don’t speak any other language apart from their native one. So then it is quite easy – since we speak the same language!

In some areas of business, where there is a shortage of skilled labor, perhaps some companies and organizations have to rethink on how to make changes in order to integrate non Swedish speaking talents. But it takes more than only changes of the companies. Think of all the bureaucracy when validating a foreign diploma for example, working permits, or how to integrate skilled dentists into the system etc. So yes, where possible, English would make it more dynamic. However, it is not only the language that needs to be leveraged. They should have international ambassadors on key positions within an organization!

I also believe that Diversity means making sure you have a right mix of ages. Personally I see that our younger generation is very good at “living” the trends that are going on in our society, where as the people that have been working for a while, bring other things to the table, like life experience. I strive to have a mixed team but this takes time and patience to build. I have to be actively interested in the team and the team members have to be interested in each other. That is how you can build your own culture. Diversity to me is a culture with people from all different backgrounds and different ages. I also believe positive feedback is very important.
